    the reel is designed to close when you start reeling it in for a reason. so you can begin reeling as soon as the spinner hits the water. That way it wont sink down and catch weeds etc…

    Excellent advice, prosteelheader. Always check the line before retrieval. Closing the bail manually also is supposed to help prevent line twist problems. Unfortunately some of my old school spinning reels won’t release the bail without rotating the head ( 1950-1980ish Mitchell/Garcia Mitchell 300 & 400 series).
